If you own a BlackBerry phone it’s more than likely that you would have received one or more of the sickening broadcasts informing users to meet and loot.

The aftermath of the London riots followed by riots in Birmingham, Liverpool, Bristol and other towns/cities has meant that the government and police are doing everything they can to reduce the chance of riots continuing for the 4th night.

Many social media networks such as BBM and Twitter have been blamed for the cunning operation of youths gathering in order to loot as police try and put a stop to the “biggest urban crime ever in England”.

Locations affected by the riots

BlackBerry messenger or BBM is a free messaging service which allows Blackberry users the ability to communicate with each other. It is the ease of contacting people by mass messaging that has created fear amongst the government and police. A message broadcasted to BlackBerry users yesterday warned them that services would be cut off in the evening, but this warning did not materialize. However there is now talk of government officials asking RIM, the makers of Blackberry, to cut their services tonight.
RIM have said they will co-operate with police investigations in order for justice to be given to people who have lost their homes and businesses. Patrick Spence, the managing director regional marketing at Research In Motion (RIM), confirmed that the BlackBerry manufacturer had contacted police to assist with the investigation.

We feel for those impacted by the riots in London. We have engaged with the authorities to assist in any way we can.

He added that RIM complies with UK legislation on the interception of communication and co-operates fully with the Home Office. One broadcast which is said to have been created in Stratford, East London urged residents to “get rich”

If you’re down for making money, we’re about to go hard in east london tonight, yes tonight!!” it said. “I don’t care what ends you’re from, we’re personally inviting you to come and get it in. Police have taken the piss for too long and to be honest I don’t know why its taken so long for us make this happen. We need a minimum of 200 hungry people. We’re not broke, but who says no to free stuff. Doesn’t matter if the police arrive cos we’ll just chase dem out because as you’ve seen on the news, they are NOT ON DIS TING. Everyone meet at 7 at stratford park and let’s get rich.

RIM’s Inside BlackBerry blog has also been hacked after the company declared it would cooperate with UK Police to help bring individuals involved in the London riots to justice. A hacking group going by the name TeaMp0isoN takes credit for the attack, issuing its own statement that says that innocent members of the public will “be charged for no reason at all, [as] the Police are looking to arrest as many people as possible to save themselves from embarrassment”.
