Police have arrested 40 people suspected of planning to riot at the Notting Hill Carnival this weekend. The crackdown on gangs comes after the London riots which rocked the nation earlier this month.

Five suspects were arrested yesterday in early morning raids by armed officers. Speaking about the yearly festival London Mayor Boris Johnson said

It is going to be robustly policed… That is the key thing… Even if I were to issue a fatwa to say the carnival cannot take place, that would not stop people wanting to celebrate on the streets of west London

There will be around 6,000 officers at the carnival, more than ever before and police have persuaded carnival organisers to close proceedings an hour earlier than usual.

The carnival takes place this weekend will you be attending?
