Police have begun investigating an accusation of rape that occurred last weekend at Bestival on the Isle of Wight.

The young victim told police that she was approached by a man she did not know whilst watching Robyn’s set on the main stage on Sunday evening and was assaulted between 7.30pm and 8.30pm.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who attended the concert on Sunday and may have seen a man matching the description given to get in touch. They are also appealing for the man himself to come forward, “so the full circumstances can be established as soon as possible.”

Rapes at festivals are not uncommon. These events have been known to provide opportunities for girls to be taken advantage of, especially if drugs and alcohol are involved. There was a rape case at Latitude festival in Suffolk last year which led to festival promoters giving out anti-rape advice.

Parents and many festival goers are now wondering what can be done to prevent an incident like this happening again.

The man is described as black, muscular and with braided hair. He is roughly 6ft tall and is believed to be in his 20s. He was wearing a white top with a navy blue collar and navy blue short sleeves.

Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact Isle of Wight CID at Newport Police Station by phoning 101 or emailing [email protected] can be given anonymously by calling the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
