Ever since Kidulthood the number of films and television dramas about London youth crime, gangs and drugs seems to have multiplied, and later this month Kano makes his acting debut alongside Ashley Walters in new drama series Top Boy.
The basic plot revolves around Dushane (played by Ashley Walters) running a less than successful business on the Summerhouse Estate with best friend Sully (played by Kano) when he attracts the attention of local drug dealer Bobby Raikes (Geoff Bell). Dushane then embarks on the mission of becoming ‘top boy’, which of course has dangerous consequences for his family and anyone else in the way.
Scorcher also makes an appearance as Dushane’s nemesis Kamale. The production release puts it like this:
Featuring an ensemble cast of brilliant new talent, Top Boy is writer Ronan Bennett’s new four-part drama about young lives lived on the edge and, for the most part, lived out of sight in east London today. Directed by Yann Demange, Top Boy showcases a fresh and dynamic line up of first-time actors, brought together through extensive talent searches across London.
Thrilling, raw, frightening, sad, hopeful and surprisingly funny by turn, this original drama is an honest and gripping rendition of inner-city urban drug and gang culture. Top Boy looks at the heart of life in a world we think we know but rarely see or understand.
We can’t say the story looks original, surely we’ve seen it all before? But nevertheless we are intrigued to see how Kano and Scorcher’s acting turns out. Pappzd will definitely be monitoring the series and letting you know whatever gossip we get hold of.
Will you guys be switching on or switching off?
