A 21-year-old man was shot dead at the funeral of 17-year-old Joel Morgan in what detectives have said could have been a revenge attack by a rival gang.
Joel, also know as Jolly Jozey, died in a car accident last month in Surrey and his funeral was held on Wednesday at Camberwell Old Cemetery in East Dulwich. However, what was meant to be a time for family and friends to grieve, quickly turned into a terrifying experience for hundreds of guests as an armed gunman appeared and began to open fire.
The gunman fired at 21-year-old Azezur Khan at close range, causing his death, while a 17-year-old boy was injured after being shot in the ankle.
A friend of Mr Khan claimed that he had not been the person the gunman meant to kill saying
They were aiming for someone else, but it hit him instead. The other guys ran away. It wasn’t meant to be him that was shot.
Joel’s mother, Carlene Brooks, was burying her son when she heard the gun shots. She said
Everyone went into a panic. I didn’t see anything because I was just there for Joel. I was paying attention to what I was doing. Now I’m not only burying my son, but to hear another boy has died is devastating. I can’t believe another family now has to go through what I’m going through.
Four people, two males and two females, have been arrested but now released on bail in connection with the shooting.
Our thoughts are with the boys families.
