British comedian Gina Yashere did an ‘Estelle’ and swapped the UK for the US in 2008, but now she’s back touring the UK with her new show Live: In Colour.

But if her latest interview is anything to go by, don’t expect to see her driving around in a fancy sports car or shopping in Harrods. Gina recently told newspaper The Voice that money didn’t come with fame.

I got famous, but I ain’t rich, I should be up there with Chris Rock. Michael McIntyre used to open for me a few years ago. I lent him forty quid to get a cab home once. Now he’s a multi-millionaire.

But those are the type of opportunities that black comics do not get over here [in the UK], so you have to leave. America is where the big money is. I’ve made it here. I’m famous, but the fame does not match the lifestyle. If I had this fame in America, I would be a hell of a lot richer! When you’re in England struggling, no one cares, when you go somewhere, especially America and you make a success of yourself, that’s when you start getting work. That’s what you’ve got to do to get ahead

Gina has found success in America, appearing on the Tonight With Jay Leno show and even securing a one-hour comedy special of her stand up show Skinny Bitch on US channel Showtime.

But despite her achievements, the east London star still believes opportunities are limited. And if there are no opportunities, there’s no money.

Another great British star stolen by the Yanks. What do we have to do to get them to stay!
