20-year-old footballer Tom Adeyemi broke down in tears after he was racially abused by Liverpool fans at Anfield in an FA cup match against his team Oldham on Friday. Merseyside police have arrested a 20-year-old man from Aintree on the suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.
Adeyemi had to be consoled by team members from both sides after fans in the Liverpool crowd hurled a tirade of abuse from the stands, allegedly calling him, ‘a f*cking black bastard’ during The Reds 5-1 win against their lower league opposition. This comes days after Liverpool’s own footballer Luis Suarez was given an eight match football ban for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.
According to witnesses the abuse started near the end of the 3rd round match, fans were seen wearing Luis Suarez T-shirts and waving scarves with the player’s name on it. As Adeyemi was being comforted by his team mates, fans began singing the name Suarez leaving the player in tears. Liverpool released a statement saying,
Liverpool Football Club continue to work closely with Merseyside Police to establish all the facts surrounding the incident that occurred during last night’s game…We take this matter extremely seriously and have today provided the police with the evidence we currently have available to us… In addition, we have examined records of the tickets purchased in that part of the ground to see if they provide any additional information and have passed that on to the police.
The event will undoubtedly mark the club’s reputation following the recent suspension handed out to striker Luis Suarez for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.
