 A 21-year-old student has been arrested for making racist remarks on Twitter in regards to footballer Fabrice Muamba and the heart attack  he had during an FA Cup football match.

Liam Stacey tweeted several racist messages including ‘LOL, F*** Muamba. He’s dead’, ‘You w** ****, go pick some cotton’, ‘You are a silly ****, your mum was a w** and your dad was a rapist.’

Stacey was arrested by South Wales Police on Sunday and appeared in court on Monday. He was charged with a racially aggravated public order offence and entered a guilty plea. Stacey is currently on bail, due to appear in court again on 27 March.

The remarks have been rebuked by the suspect’s University and his rugby team; Swansea University and Treorchy RFC.

 A Swansea University spokesman said:

We disassociate ourselves from any racist remarks… We are an equal opportunities university and will be looking into this matter. We will of course cooperate fully with any police investigation.

The racist remarks come at an extremely sensitive time as Muamba, 23, is currently in hospital in critical condition however according to a joint statement by Barts hospital and Bolton Wanderers Muamba is ‘showing small signs of improvement.’

Fans all around the country have been grieving and many high-profile footballers such as David Beckham, Jermain Defoe and Michael Owen have all voiced their concern.
