Although a number of people may have fallen victim to bullying at some point in their lives, it’s hard to imagine Luther star Idris Elba was one of them.

However, the buff 39-year-old has revealed that even he was bullied in his teenage years and this led to him changing his name.

The actor’s real name is in fact Idrissa, which means ‘firstborn son’, but he decided to shorten it to Idris after becoming tired of beating up bullies who teased him because it sounded feminine.

He told New York Magazine:

I quickly got well known because I was tall and wasn’t taking any shit.

Idris went on to explain that growing up in Hackney, north east London, and being the son of West African immigrants, meant that racist name calling was a given.

He faced particular abuse from the extreme right-wing political party, The National Front, during his time attending high school in Canning Town, east London.

He said:

Their beliefs are ‘keep Britain white.’ Walking down the street, someone would call you a black c*nt. I was like, ‘Fuck that.’

Well, he might have a slightly ‘feminine’ name, but it doesn’t seem to have stopped the Golden Globe winning actor from being a success in the UK and in the States.

Looks like Idrissa has the last laugh.
