Lauren Socha, star of E4’s Misfits, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four months in jail on Wednesday for racially aggravated assault of a taxi driver.
The talented actress, who won a BAFTA for her role as Kelly in the science fiction drama series, attacked Sakander Iqbal in Derby city centre following a nine hour drinking session in October last year.
Iqbal, 52, said Socha punched him causing him to almost lose control of his car and described to The Independent how it was the worst racial abuse he had experienced since moving to the UK in 1970. He said:
She called me a P**i, a dirty b**stard and said, ‘You’re Asian, f**k off back to where you came from. She said, ‘Do you know who I am? I’ll have your family lifted’. It made me feel absolutely terrible. I’m extra careful now whenever I pick anybody up in my taxi. It’s left me really distraught.
Judge Hilary Watson described the behaviour as ‘despicable’, while Socha’s mother insisted that it was ‘out of character’, which is quite ironic considering that this actually sounds exactly like the gobby character she plays on screen.
In addition to her sentence, Socha will have to pay compensation to her victim, court costs and complete 80 hours of community service.
Socha’s jail time has been suspended for a year but it doesn’t look like she’ll be working during those 12 months, as Channel 4 have confirmed that she is not returning to Misfits for the new series. However, they claim her new criminal record has nothing to do with the departure.
We guess that means she won’t be able to use the ‘do you know who I am?’ line anymore then.
