Saturday saw Hackney Marshes transform into festival heaven complete with overpriced hot dogs (a fiver for a bloody foot-long), Z-listers attempting to upgrade their status to D-list by surrounding themselves with an ‘entourage’ (ahem Mark Wright). And of course no festival would be complete without the now obligatory Hunter wellies.
Much off the action was kicking off in the 1Xtra tent so we headed in that direction, where we spotted a demure looking Lady Leshurr bopping along to the DJ Fresh set. Skepta and BBK quickly followed sending the crowd wild and causing me to almost lose my hat (and an eye) in the ensuing chaos.
That was nothing compared to the mass hysteria that set in when Trey Songz swaggered on to the stage and wooed all of the frisky teenage girls in the crowd with his sexually charged hits. A camera swoop of the audience showed a handful of girls in tears and a few others about to come to blows when Trey threw his sweaty vest out into the crowd.
Nicki Minaj was next to play on the main stage arriving in a predictable, outrageous outfit. Only some of the crowd were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of her platinum blonde wig, which appeared to be creeping steadily down her forehead. During her lacklustre performance she belted out a few hits but seemed so uninterested in it all, I figured now was the right time for a toilet break.
As darkness fell the crowd thickened near the front of the main stage waiting with baited breath for Jay-Z to make his much hyped appearance. The undisputed king of hip hop did not disappoint. Swaggering on stage to a collective scream from fans. Jigga opened with Run This Town featuring the gangsta clad Rihanna, then swiftly belted out hit after classic hit before bringing out M.I.A who had a diva strop during her song when her mic cut out.
After a brief pause, a spotlight suddenly appeared and there was Kanye West on stage next to Hova and the heaving crowd whopped and cheered loudly knowing full well things were about to get real freaking wild.
Otis dropped and we all did our best Kanye scream but after a selection of the best of the Watch The Throne album, the moment we’d all been waiting for finally came.
With our diamonds in the sky Jay Z ripped into N***as In Paris and we bounced madly waiting for Kanye’s verse to drop. On ‘Mary Kate and Ashley’ Hova pulled the hit up and the camera swooped in on his lovely missus Beyonce down in the mosh pit with some commoners
Voices lost and throats hoarse we cried out for another encore but Hova thanked his surprise guests, his fans and said a final farewell before disappearing backstage leaving us all breathless at what we’d just witnessed.
