Footballer Jermain Defoe had to fly back to England this morning after receiving the news that his 47-year-old father Jimmy had died after loosing his battle with throat cancer.
The England striker returned home only a day after he arrived with his fellow England team mates in Krakow, Poland ahead of their first training session for their game against France on Monday.
An FA statement said:
Jermain has returned home to England this morning following the passing of his father overnight… He will rejoin the England Euro squad in due course. There will be no replacement player called in.
This isn’t the first time the Tottenham Hotspur player has dealt with the loss of a close family member during his footballing career. In 2009 his 26-year-old brother Jade Defoe, also known as grime MC Ecso Bars, died after he was brutally attacked in Leytonstone, east London.
Our condolences go out to Defoe and his family.
