Since forever, male and female artists have been ‘selling sex’ in their music and accompanying videos, but Adele ensures she’s not one of them.
The 24-year-old Londoner, who has broken chart-records selling a staggering 24 million copies of her album 21, claims that her commercial success is not due to a sexy image.
Speaking exclusively to The Sun newspaper, Adele said:
I’ve seen [artists who sell a sexy image] up close, and they don’t even look like that.
Expanding on her statement, the down-to-earth Londoner went on to say:
I just stand there and sing. I’m not worried that I’m a ‘plus size’ and so much bigger than other artists. No matter what you look like the key is to be happy with yourself.
While I understand completely where Adele is coming from, I disagree with her up to a certain point.
With her statement definitely bearing some truth, there are a lot of artists who have depended on ‘selling sex’ but also have the talent to carry them the distance (Beyonce for one). I mean, you don’t have your looks forever right? If you look good and have great talent, who’s anyone to complain?
When I was researching photos for this article I have to say, I wasn’t able to find a single sexy picture of Adele anywhere. Not even the not-at-all sexy shoot she did for Vogue; breasts and cleavage all out like the sun at high noon. Hello!
With that being said, Adele’s talent is clearly undeniable. She clearly just doesn’t understand not everyone can push millions of units in 12 months like her!
