Nathan Abraham Lauren Fagan-Gayle, perhaps better known as Starboy Nathan, shocked viewers on Sunday night with his surprise audition on X Factor.

Now, Starboy Nathan has already had two Top 40 hits, including Come Into My Room and Diamonds. Earlier this month he even released a single called Hangover which featured Wretch 32, although unfortunately, it only debuted at number 92 on the UK singles chart.

It isn’t often we see artists as established as Starboy Nathan perform on X Factor. His audition seemed to cause quite a bit of controversy online. Many people didn’t seem to think it fair that he got through to the next round of auditions and X Factor should be left open for those struggling, unknown artists trying to make it.

After all, he has been quite successful in his own right, previously working alongside JLS, The Wanted and, most significantly, N-Dubz. He even has a blue tick on his Twitter!

Many fans were surprised:

Some voiced their disapproval:

Some celebrities were supportive:

However, Starboy Nathan took time to log onto his VERIFIED Twitter account to remind his fans, and critics that

We all know it’s not easy to make it in the music industry, so you have to respect Starboy Nathan for grasping any and every opportunity offered to him. I mean, look what it did for him:

Interestingly, he has an album set to release in November, so even if things don’t work out perfectly for him on X Factor, this should be a nice bit of publicity for him. Or maybe that was the entire point.

Nicely played Nathan, nicely played.

Do you think X Factor is pulling new stunts to draw in viewers to their ailing format? Yesterday they had Bianca Gascoigne (step-daughter of ex England football legend Paul Gascoigne, and a previous mini celebrity in her own right) although she got four no’s.
