Last week a call went out for ‘non-white’ young aspiring hopefuls to attend open auditions in Hackney for the chance to appear in the new series of Channel 4’s hit drama Top Boy.
The casting was cancelled today when apparently up to 2,000 young people arrived at the audition venue, taking organisers by surprise.
Rumours that there was violence, including stabbings and gunshots, have been dismissed by police and people tweeting from the scene.
While there is no evidence of serious violence, the video we found (see above) does show some rushing crowd scenes, although these can be common at events where crowd control has not been correctly managed.
Some took to Twitter to perpetuate rumours that there was serious violence, even making a joke out of it.
LOOOOL So many people went through so much stress to get to the "Top Boy" Auditions and next min I'm hearing there was gunshot not 1,2 but 3

Yeah, that’s not really an ‘LOOOOL’ situation, is it?
Hearing from numerous sources that there was a shooting at the top boy season 2 open auditions today if its true what an absolute disgrace

The general consensus is that the views held by people like those above, are wrong.
It seems there were just too many people who turned up and the situation became a crowd control problem.
People who went to the auditions were obviously disappointed with the way the event turned out
Why I went to the top boy auditions ill never know, you ppl r disrespectful they opened it up 2 the community n you run around like wallys.

I'm still seething about the top boy 2 auditions earlier, don't worry I'll get over it, but a little faith died.

Some Twitter users were more pragmatic
Top Boy 2 Auditions :/ poor management on their part. I feel it for the young people passionate about acting that attended.

Wow! The crowd that turned up for the Top Boy 2 casting was mad! Well at least its evident that so many teens want to do something positive!

Kojo the comedian thought it was a good moment to crack a joke
Wow! So Top Boy auditions have apparently had a madness outside!!! They must have asked people to show why they'd be right for the part.

The casting call, which went out across Twitter, several websites and acting circles contained the following message:
We are looking for the following:
BLACK / MIXED RACE / ASIAN / NON WHITE GIRLS AND BOYS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 13 AND 16.
No acting experiences is necessary
Please do not attend the casting if you do not fit the above description as we will not be able to see you.
SUNDAY, 11TH NOVEMBER, 12.00 – 5.00 p.m.
VENUE: HOXTON HALL, 130 HOXTON STREET, LONDON N1 6SH
Pappzd Magazine chose not to retweet the casting call, and decided against posting a short news piece written by one of our writers to promote it.
Not that we didn’t want to support it, we loved Top Boy and loved the idea of giving young Londoners the opportunity to get involved. We just shared the same reservations as this Twitter user
The way that Top Boy 2 casting txt is being circulated. :| I just pray the producers have their ish organised.

Did they really know what they were getting into? And finally on the subject, we kinda like the comment made by this Twitter user
In all, it’s a big shame that the auditions were cancelled prematurely but we’re relieved that there was not trouble and that nobody got hurt.
