Double Olympic Gold winner Mo Farah was hoping to return to his new hometown, Portland Oregon over Christmas, but his gold medal status could not prevent him from being held by US customs on suspicions of being a terrorist.
Mo, who moved to the US last year, claims he is constantly stopped by US customs because of his Somali origin, despite shooting to international fame this year with his London 2012 Olympics victories.
The 29-year-old athlete tried to enter the border this year in hopes of having a drama-free Christmas, but revealed in The Sun on Sunday, that he was hassled once more by US customs.
He was then detained for questioning by the US border force once they had seen he was born in Somalia.
Speaking on the frustrating experience, Mo told the newspaper:
I couldn’t believe it. Because of my Somali origin I get detained every time I come through US Customs.
He then went on to reveal he even showed them his prized gold medals, in hopes of validating his identity:
This time I even got my medals out to show who I am, but they wouldn’t have it.
Ummmm… slightly ridiculous if we say, you mean to tell us not one member of the US border control had watched the worldwide projected Olympics over the Summer?
Well, actually, I’m not surprised. The Americans only watch their athletes and Usain Bolt. They probably don’t even know who Jessica Ennis or Oscar Pistorius is.
Maybe Mo should have challenged an airport member to a race and done some long distance running around the airport, just to prove his Olympic status!
