MTV Base hosted the 2012  Best of the Best UK MC show last night, in front of a live panel of music industry judges and Traktor rapper, Wretch 32 was crowned the winner for a second year in a row.

The show featured judges MistaJam, Charlie Sloth, SB.TV’s Georgia LA, Naughty Boy, Loick Essien, So Solid’s Mega and GRM Daily’s Posty who debated back and forth with opinions on who should of made the tight top 10 list,  based on a criteria of MC ability, mainstream breakthrough success, charisma and buzz.

With the UK rap scene making rapid movements on charts in the UK and stateside, it was probably the most intense debate yet, in terms of narrowing it down to a list of 10 of the country’s very best.

Surprisingly, the 10th place spot was occupied by two artists;  Blade Brown who held down the same position on the list back in 2011, however this year he shared the position with Mic Righteous.

As the debate continued, Lady Leshurr was able to grab the number 9 position, becoming the first female to grace the list, which was definitely a good look for the future of UK female rap.

Hopefully, her landing on the chart will serve as the start for female rappers in the UK to compete at the same level as their male peers.

The controversial top 10 list can be seen below, including 2012’s winner:

10. Mic Righteous/Blade Brown

9. Lady Leshurr

8. Chip

7. Devlin

6. K. Koke

5. Tinie Tempah

4. Wiley

3. Skepta

2. Giggs

1. Wretch 32

Though we’re not trying to take away accomplishments from anyone listed, we can’t help but think that the list is a bit dodgy, in terms of the positioning and the the winner crowned.

Granted that Wretch 32 had a phenomenal 2011, when he was first crowned winner – which we’re sure is due to the commercial success he received from his first album – his musical career in 2012 was bland in comparison to his previous year.

However, the rapper was very heavy on guest features such as Cheryl Cole and Chip; and he did appear on Labrinth’s Earthquake remix, so perhaps attaching his name to high profile artists is what kept his buzz going from last year, thus contributing to him snagging the winner’s position again.

It would have made more sense for an artist like Wiley to have gained the number one position, as he did in fact score one of the biggest singles of last summer with his song Heatwave, as well as a further top five hit with the follow-up single, Can You Hear Me.

We’ve actually looked at the list and after reviewing some of the entries, we’ve decided to compose our very own list of 2012’s Best of the Best UK MC’s:

Pappzd Best of the Best UK MC’s 2012:

10. Devlin

3. Chip

2.  Skepta

1. Wiley

Agree with MTV’s list?

We do think ours looks a little better but if you have any suggestions, let us know who you would have put in your top 10. It will be really interesting to see our readers’ responses and maybe we can decide if MTV had it all wrong!
