For the first time in the BBC’s history, the traditional annual BBC Proms event at the Royal Albert Hall will include urban music.

The BBC Proms usually celebrates music from classical composers such as Beethoven and Mozart, but this year Laura Mvula, Fazer and Maverick Sabre will be performing with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Conducter Jules Buckley said of the event:

It’s a culture clash.

We’re taking artists from different worlds and messing with their music, putting it in an orchestral context and exploring it in a new way.

Muyiwa and Riversongs and a capella group Naturally 7 are also added to the Proms in two separate gospel musical sessions.

The Urban Classics Prom with Fazer and Laura Mvula will take place on Saturday 10 August.
