Ever since news of Beyonce and Andre 3000 covering Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black emerged, fans of the Rehab singer had been upset and disgruntled about it.

It seems they felt it would not live up to the original as the song was being remade for the The Great Gatsby soundtrack.

Over the weekend an extended snippet of the song’s Beyonce & Andre 3000 remake leaked onto the web and, having listened to it, I think it takes on a completely new approach to the soul classic, with a modern hip hop twist.

While most fans (of both women) are waiting to hear the song in full, the snippet has already received mixed reactions from fans online and Amy’s father, Mitch Winehouse, was quoted as allegedly saying:

I don’t think she brings anything to it, I wasn’t asked for my permission if they could record it.

Hmmm, not sure anybody needed his ‘permission’ but then I may be wrong and he may actually own the publishing rights after all.

However, in an interesting turn of events Mitch revealed on his Twitter page that he does in fact like the cover but feels that Beyonce should have to pay a £100,000 contribution fee towards the Amy Winehouse foundation  as he claims the money received will help a lot of kids in need, but did not specify what those needs were.

Sounds like Mr Winehouse is still famously trying to stay relevant and keep himself in the limelight. I’m sure whatever licensing arrangements were necessary have been fully met in order for the cover to go ahead, we’re talking about Beyonce not an obscure artist.

I think this is quite interesting, as artists cover songs all the time and have been doing so for many years, is it really that big a deal?

Interestingly enough Amy’s hit single with Mark Ronson, Valerie was in fact a cover and not her song so I wonder what the issue is here.

What do you think, should Beyonce make a donation of £100,000 to cover Amy’s song? Will Mitch use some of the money to pay unnecessary donations to all the artists Amy covered?
