36-year-old Emma West, the woman seen shouting abuse in the viral YouTube video My Tram Experience has been sentenced to 24 months community service after pleading guilty to a racially aggravated public order offence.

Croydon Crown Court heard that West was suffering from mental health problems at the time of the racist rant, and took two and a half times more of the recommended dosage of her medication and drank a large glass of wine.

However, her 24 month community order is actually her punishment for separate incidents in which she assaulted her partner and a police officer.

West’s lawyer, David Martin-Sperry, said the defendant’s behaviour in the video was out of character and claimed she wasn’t racist. A judge noted that West was clearly suffering from mental health issues at the time of the rant, which was recorded and watched by 11 million people.
