A cafe owner in Osset, West Yorkshire has had to go to the extreme lengths of putting a sign in her shop window to warn customers that she is a black woman, because of the way she’s been treated in the past.
Martha-Renee Kolleh, who runs Yeanon Cafe which serves British, African and Carribean cuisine, is said to be fed up of the way people in the area react to the colour of her skin.
With nearly 99% of Osset’s population being white, Martha-Renee who has owned the cafe for two years, has said that the sign has received some mixed reactions:
Some people find it amusing, they were laughing and said ‘oh yes it’s about time you put that up’, so I think they all realise what’s going on here.
And some others just read it and walk away. I’ve heard one or two swear words as well regarding the notice.
You’d think after two years the people of Osset would be accustomed to a little diversity in the area. It’s a shame that Kolleh has had to go to these lengths.
