Handpicked by the ex president’s own family, Idris Elba must be feeling the pressure to pull off his performance of the international icon in the new bio pic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

With Nelson Mandela now being kept alive by a life support machine leaving his family with the terribly hard decision of whether to switch it off or not, the film has become even more relevant and highly anticipated by the public.

Currently highly regarded as ever by critics for his latest performances in Luther, taking on the role of Mandela is a risky one with getting his accent just right being the first and one of the most important steps in gaining approval.

Having impressed in the past with his flawless New York accent as gangster Stringer Bell in The Wire, it seems mastering accents may be something of a gift for the actor as in a short trailer for the film we are given the first listen of Elba speaking in character and not much else.

The film is released in cinemas 3 January 2014 and stars fellow Brit actress Naomie Harris as Mandela’s ex wife Winnie.

What do you think?  Has he pulled it off?  Do you think the role should have been given to someone else?
