Usain Bolt: faster than Sonic, mates with Richard Branson, gully creeping God and…footballer? The 100 metre sprint champion is set to add another line to his epic CV, by donning the red shirt for Manchester United.
Ferdinand has managed to twist the arm of new boss David Moyes (like that would have been hard. It’s Usain-Bloody-Bolt!) to make an appearance during an August match against Sevilla, which will mark Ferdinand’s 10 year stint at Old Trafford.
The multiple gold medal winning runner has always made his affinity with Man U clear and is known to be friends with the recently retired, permanently red faced Sir Alex Ferguson. It is believed Bolt had tried to warm the Scotsman to the idea of him playing before his retirement, to no avail. The 26-year-old had put his best foot forward, saying:
I know I could make a difference. I’d be the fastest in the team — but I can play as well. If Ferguson called me up and said, ‘OK let’s do this, come and have a trial’, it would be impossible for me to say no.
Ferguson (whose career at United spans Bolt’s entire life), had included Bolt on a side that would have come against Real Madrid Legends in a friendly last month, but plans unfortunately fell through before his retirement.
As we all know, Bolt’s real strengths lie on the track as he proved at Diamond League in Paris achieving 19.73 seconds in the 200m, totally destroying Michael Johnson’s 23-year-old record of 20.01 seconds. Good to see he’s doing his ridiculously coincidental surname proud!
