The first day of the inquest into Mark Duggan’s death began at the Royal Courts of Justice today, just as the Duggan family made statements saying that they had lost faith in the police.
Mark Duggan’s mother and brother
One of Mark’s brothers made a statement:
We feel we’re the most hated family in Britain… It is more than two years since I lost my brother, but we are no nearer to finding out what happened on the day Mark was killed and why.
Mark’s mother Pam has also spoken of her mistrust and feelings of being let down, saying:
We have been provided with nothing but lies, misinformation, and delay. We hope that the truth will finally come out for the sake of all his family, not least his young children.
Mark was shot by police in August 2011 as he was in a taxi in Tottenham – police suspected that Mark was armed and was on his way to carry out a revenge killing for the murder of his cousin.
Kevin Hutchinson-Foster, who was found guilty of supplying Mark with a gun earlier this year, will also give evidence at the inquest which will determine the circumstances which led to Mark being shot and killed by the police.
The inquest is expected to last eight weeks.
