A man  in his 20s has died after jumping on the train tracks as he was being chased by police who stopped him on suspicion of possessing drugs.

The man, who has not been named, was hit by a Chiltern Railways train in Willesden just after 5pm. He had been chased down by police for the last 40 minutes, when they stopped him on Christchurch Avenue and attempted to search him for drugs. The chase resulted in the involvement of dozens of police officers, dogs and helicopters.

After taking some back roads and hiding in bushes, the suspect ran on to the lines at a level crossing where he was hit by the oncoming train. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said that a post-mortem examination would be taking place and the man’s family had been informed of the incident:

The two officers stopped the man since they believed him to be in possession of drugs. He was not arrested. After a short period, he broke away from the officers and made off. He was pursued and observed from a distance.
