L: Shawn Green, R: Victim Derek Boateng

Shawn Green, 16, has been sentenced to jail to 12 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of 16-year-old Derek Boateng, as he travelled on the 393 bus to go home to celebrate his birthday.

Derek was on the bus going through Highbury in April of this year, when he got into a minor exchange of words with Green who was 15 at the time. The victim was airlifted to the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead after collapsing at the scene. He later died in hospital from his injuries.

DCI Chris Jones told the Old Bailey:

It is dreadful to think that Derek, who was celebrating his 16th birthday, lost his life over nothing more than a brief clash with another teenager.

This dreadful tragedy has left a family grieving for a much-loved son, brother and friend who had everything to live for.

The incident has also wrecked another teenager’s life and Derek’s 16-year-old attacker will now spend many years behind bars.

It demonstrates the devastating consequences of carrying knives and the serious harm it has on our communities.
