Naomie Harris has opened up about meeting Winnie Mandela and why she was so terrified.
The talented actress plays the role of Nelson Mandela’s second wife Winnie in the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and was unsure about how Winnie would react to the portrayal.
Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show on Saturday she said:
I was absolutely terrified about meeting her because I’d read so much about her. She’s such a formidable woman and I didn’t know how she was going to react to me. I didn’t know whether she was happy about me being cast or how she felt about herself being portrayed in the movie, but she was incredibly generous.
Luckily for Naomie, Winnie enjoyed her performance, telling the 37-year-old that it was first time she felt her story had been captured on film.
Well that must have been a relief! Imagine the awkwardness, if she thought Naomie had done a bad job.
