The IT Crowd actor Chris O’Dowd has accused X Factor viewers of being racist, claiming that some of them tend to discriminate against the black hopefuls.
Chris told Radio Times that he’s a fan of the show, but all his favourites are voted off in the early stages.
Generally my favourites go out in the first few weeks and, of course, because the viewing public is so racist, all the black, strong singers go out in round five every year.
Simon Cowell, was obviously unimpressed and told Entertainmentwise that his show is definitely not racist.
We are the least racist show you could possibly find in the world. So not only is he ignorant, it’s actually insulting to hear him say that. And it’s insulting to our audience. Alexandra Burke, JLS, Leona Lewis. It’s ridiculous.
Actually it’s not that ridiculous Simon, especially when people like Misha B and Hannah Barrett are being voted out and joke acts like Rylan and Wagner get all the votes.
Simon Woolley of race rights group Operation Black Vote also gave his opinion on the X Factor race issue.
I wouldn’t describe voters as racist, but there’s something more subtle going on which makes it harder for contestants with a ‘darker’ physical complexion to win public support. Generally the ‘blacker’ the artist is, the harder it is for the public to warm to them.
What do you guys think? Are X Factor viewers racist?
